Advising@VCU
Advising@VCU is a quarterly series hosted in person by Katina Velentzas and Katherine Drumm in Student Success Technologies. Academic advisors, or staff serving in an equivalent capacity, are required to attend a workshop within the first six months of their employment in an advising role. As new advisors are onboarded to VCU, our office will send them a calendar invite to an upcoming session.
Attendance affords new advisors the opportunity to meet both Student Success Technologies leadership as well as their fellow advisors. This series helps to facilitate the development of an advising community that can provide peer support and collaborate on advising strategies. We believe that when advisors have the knowledge and skills they need to effectively support students, they are more likely to feel confident in their ability to do so. This series benefits both the individual advisor and the advising community-at-large. For the individual advisor, Advising@VCU is a conduit to meet other advisors new to VCU and to begin planning their long-term career development. For the community-at-large, Advising@VCU seeks to establish a common understanding and set of expectations for academic advisors at VCU. This helps to ensure that advisors are aligned with VCU’s goals and priorities for its academic advising community and also helps to create consistency in our advising practices.
